Explanation
Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
American Robotics seeks authorization for Special Temporary Authority because the systems that it is implanting require a limited testing timeframe to ensure that they are compatible with client needs in the requested service areas. After six months of testing, American Robotics will be able to determine whether such systems provide sufficient service to its clients. It intends to start testing as soon as possible for the terrestrial only ground links outlined in the application.

Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:  American Robotics Inc. (“AR”), pursuant to Section 5.61 of the Rules and Regulations of the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC” or “Commission”), hereby requests special temporary authorization (“STA”) of a conventional experimental radio service station for a period of 6 months. American Robotics develops, manufactures, and operates an autonomous drone system capable of providing high-resolution aerial data to its industrial customers. AR’s customers subscribe to a service to access the data generated by American Robotics drone operations in their area of interest. American Robotics customers includes Oil & Gas Companies, Electric Utilities and Rail Operators. The AR system consists of the following systems: 1) a proprietary drone with advanced imaging collection capabilities, 2) a ruggedized base station for housing and charging the drone, data processing, and cloud transfer, and 3) a secure web portal and API which enables remote interaction with the system data. These major systems are connected via supporting technologies including a including a Detect-and-Avoid (“DAA”) technology known as TASA. The TASA system consists of several acoustic remote listening devices in the general area of the drone operation. The acoustic devices listen for aircraft and other airborne objects. If an object is detected, the acoustic device sends avoidance data to the Base Station. From there it is communicated to the drone over the 900 MHz ISM band. Typically, TASA uses the 2.4 GHz band for the communications links between acoustic listening devices and the Base Station. However, in this instance, the 2.4 GHz band is used extensively in the area for other operations. Thus, in order to mitigate interference, AR is proposing to experiment with the use of the 1.4 GHz band. Note the proposed operations under STA are for terrestrial links only. Communications to the drones will be over 900 MHz Part 15 links. AR seeks to commence operations as soon as possible and requests expedited treatment of this application to the extent available.
