Explanation
Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Consistent with Section 5.54(a)(2) of the FCCs rules, an STA is appropriate because operations at the requested location will last three days, which is less than six months. Drone Racing League (DRL) will use an experimental distributed antennae system that includes a proprietary ground station and distributed antennae that DRL developed internally to support drone racing events. During earlier phases of development, DRL discovered that the use of unlicensed or ISM band spectrum proved problematic - drones failed to connect properly, video quality was degraded, etc. - pushing DRL to consider alternative bands. Before using any frequencies requested in this application, DRL will monitor the immediate spectral environment to identify specific bands that are capable of delivering the high-quality video and connectivity to drones required to successfully conduct drone races. All communications will occur at PayPal Park, and drones will operate at a maximum altitude of 75 feet. DRL commits to respecting the rights of any co-frequency or adjacent-band licensees. Should any interference occur as a result of DRL’s operations, DRL will take immediate steps to resolve the interference. DRL is working with - and will continue to correspond with - the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), as part of their Integrated Partnership Agreement (IPA), to discuss the proposed event and address any potential concerns related to aviation operations at San Jose International Airport. DRL will also work directly with the ATO and AFS (both San Jose FSDO and AFS-830) on the event. The event will take place under DRLs Event Accreditation, standard and approved operating plan, and waivers.
Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:
The purpose of the operation is to test and conduct communications prior to our live drone racing event happening at the same location on Oct 6th through Oct 12th (1246-EX-ST-2022). Drone racing requires real-time, low-latency communications between the pilot and drone so that the pilot may successfully navigate the drone. The drone video feed is also received at points elsewhere in the venue for audience consumption.
