News Media Information 202 / 418-0500 Internet: http://www.fcc.gov TTY: 1-888-835-5322 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: NEWS MEDIA CONTACT: January 15, 2010 David Fiske: (202) 418-0513 Email: david.fiske@fcc.gov STATEMENT OF P. MICHELE ELLISON, CHIEF, ENFORCEMENT BUREAU ON ISSUANCE OF THE BUREAU’S FIRST ENFORCEMENT ADVISORIES Today, the Enforcement Bureau launches a new initiative with the release of two Enforcement Advisories targeting critical consumer protection issues. The rules involved are designed to ensure that consumers can benefit fully from the wide array of modern communications services and technologies. While most companies and individuals take their regulatory obligations seriously, some appear unaware of what the Commission’s rules require or choose not to comply. The Enforcement Bureau will continue to work proactively to bring these entities into compliance. By the actions we take today, we affirm our commitment to strong, vigorous, and fair enforcement of the Commission’s rules. The Enforcement Bureau will periodically release Enforcement Advisories, which are designed to educate businesses about and alert consumers to what’s required by FCC rules, the purpose of those rules and why they’re important to consumers, as well as the consequences of failures to comply. We hope that these Advisories will become a familiar tool for industry and their counsel as they conduct periodic compliance reviews and increase their internal, self-policing efforts. Today’s Enforcement Advisories deal with protecting highly-sensitive information that carriers gather on their customers (i.e., customer proprietary network information) and with ensuring that individuals with hearing disabilities can fully utilize wireless phone services. Consumer protection enforcement is at the core of the Bureau’s mission. I look forward to continuing cross-Bureau and interagency efforts toward this end, as well as to working with industry, public interest groups, and other stakeholders in the months ahead.
